The hook

The famous names are fun.
The property story is better.

In most ski resorts, sharing a lift with a billionaire would be noteworthy. In Verbier, you might need to narrow it down.

Verbier combines serious skiing with privacy, an international community, chalet culture, restaurants and a social scene that can still feel surprisingly informal. That helps explain why some high-profile visitors became regulars or homeowners — and why a much larger group of international buyers keep returning.

Verbier Tourism describes the resort as a cosmopolitan Alpine village on a sunny plateau, at the heart of the 4 Vallées. Its photography was reviewed as a visual benchmark for this rebuild; protected tourism-media files are not bundled here.

Famous Verbier connections

Residents, regulars and reported visitors

We keep the categories deliberately distinct. A homeowner is not the same thing as a one-off reported visitor.

Homeowner / regular

James Blunt

Historical local reporting describes Blunt as a Verbier chalet owner and co-owner of the mountain restaurant La Vache, with a ski lift carrying his name.

Sir Richard Branson

Reported homeowner

Bear Grylls

Local resort coverage has long described Bear Grylls as a Verbier chalet owner and regular. We keep that wording as reported history.

Reported visitors

Leonardo DiCaprio & Jude Law

Both have been linked in resort coverage with stays at Branson’s The Lodge. That is a visitor story, not a claim of residence or ownership.

Reported visitors

Madonna & Pixie Lott

Verbier resort coverage has also reported visits by Madonna and Pixie Lott, reinforcing the village’s long-running music and entertainment connections.

Why it matters

Privacy without isolation

A private chalet can offer meaningful discretion while still being minutes from lifts, restaurants and the centre.

Why do people who could choose almost anywhere keep choosing Verbier?

Skiing. Privacy. International access. A real village. And a very limited supply of homes that deliver all four.

One resort. Two very different price numbers.

The figures are not necessarily contradictory. UBS is looking at different market segments.

A royal chalet sale — property, not gossip

Le Temps reported in December 2022 that Chalet Helora, formerly owned by Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, had sold for about CHF 22 million at the time.

  • Acquired by the Yorks in 2014
  • Seven bedrooms
  • Indoor swimming pool
  • Sauna, bar and entertainment space
  • Sold to a British family in 2022

The useful part of the story is not the tabloid history. It is that Verbier has repeatedly supported eight-figure chalet transactions.

When a ski room is apparently not enough

Chalet Marmottière is a useful illustration of how far ultra-prime Alpine amenities can go. The official property source lists approximately 1,500 m² and a programme that reads more like a private club than a conventional chalet.

Why so expensive?

Verbier is not one price per square metre

Limited supply

Second-home regulation makes existing eligible stock structurally important.

International demand

Buyer demand is drawn from multiple countries rather than one domestic market.

Micro-location

Small differences in lift access, sun, quietness and views can materially change desirability.

Property status

Primary-home, secondary-home and foreign-buyer eligibility can change the addressable buyer pool.

Condition & specification

Renovated, modern and energy-efficient stock can trade very differently from older accommodation.

Rarity

Exceptional chalets are not interchangeable commodities. The best assets can sit far above broad averages.
